Video Game Reference Question Best to the first person to get it right?

In Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, there is a cheat code to turn money into animals. This is obviously a Sonic the Hedgehog reference. But it is commonly referred to as a Sonic 3 reference alone. Who knows why it is specifically linked to Sonic 3?

Oddly enough, I finished reading Scott Pilgrim today for the first time…
If I remember right, Sonic’s enemies become small animals after killing them in Sonic 3. Maybe that’s the first time that happens, I’m not sure.
